{"id":1497,"date":"2024-08-14T14:10:07","date_gmt":"2024-08-14T14:10:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cumbrae.xthost.co.uk\/busv2\/?p=1497"},"modified":"2024-08-14T14:10:07","modified_gmt":"2024-08-14T14:10:07","slug":"volunteering-has-helped-me-build-a-life-in-scotland-forging-connections-through-u22s-free-bus-travel-abdulmuizs-story","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cumbrae.xthost.co.uk\/busv2\/volunteering-has-helped-me-build-a-life-in-scotland-forging-connections-through-u22s-free-bus-travel-abdulmuizs-story\/","title":{"rendered":"\u201cVolunteering has helped me build a life in Scotland\u201d Forging connections through U22\u2019s Free Bus Travel: Abdulmuiz\u2019s story"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"story__summary\">\n<p><em>From chance encounters and modern romances to budding entrepreneurs, First Bus is hero-ing the passengers at the heart of its network in an emotive new series, \u2018First Bus Firsts\u2019.<\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"story__body\">\n<p>An 18-year-old volunteer from Glasgow shares how Scotland\u2019s Young Person\u2019s Free Bus Travel scheme allows him to support people affected by cancer.<\/p>\n<p>Originally from Lagos, Nigeria, Abdulmuiz Adarangio moved to Clydebank just over a year ago and has been volunteering with Beatson Cancer Charity ever since he first spotted the charity\u2019s yellow-wrapped bus, which was donated by First Bus last year to help raise awareness of the charity throughout the city.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI heard about Beatson because I saw the big yellow bus on my way to school and when I got home, I looked it up to see what they were about\u201d,<\/em>\u00a0explains Abdulmuiz in the new video linked\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/as2J8Einw-8\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cI love volunteering because it helps me meet a lot of people. It gives me a sense of connection and this good feeling inside. Volunteering has helped me build my confidence and a sense of belonging &#8211; it\u2019s helped me feel more settled in Scotland\u201d<\/em>\u00a0he adds, talking about his experience of lending a hand as a barista within Beatson\u2019s onsite caf\u00e9, where he serves up teas and coffees to those going through cancer treatments and their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"gloo-media-embed\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Video Player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/as2J8Einw-8?si=en50KJT4JyhN_jhF\" width=\"560\" height=\"314\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\" data-mce-fragment=\"1\"><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Abdulmuiz also donates his time to take part in Beatson\u2019s bucket collections around the city, gathering generous donations from members of the public which all directly contribute to Beatson\u2019s mission to ensure no one has to face cancer alone.<\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cWithout the bus, I wouldn\u2019t be able to come down to fulfil my volunteering duties. This wouldn\u2019t be possible. The bus is easy to use because I\u2019ve got the First Bus app which I use to check timings and navigations. The best part is it\u2019s free because I\u2019ve got my Young Person\u2019s bus pass\u201d\u00a0<\/em>Abdulmuiz adds, in the hope that he can inspire more young people to use free bus travel to get involved in local volunteering opportunities.<\/p>\n<p>Marlyn Hosie, Volunteer Manager from Beatson Cancer Charity said:\u00a0<em>\u201cVolunteers like Abdulmuiz are at the heart of what we do. Their kindness, generosity and spirit embody everything that Beatson represents and we\u2019re so grateful to everyone who donates their time to help us support those experiencing cancer.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>\u201cAbdulmuiz\u2019s story shows the real-world impact of our partnership with First Bus. Something as simple as spotting our branded bus out in the streets resulted in him signing up as a volunteer and he\u2019s since become a key member of our caf\u00e9 team, brightening up the days of the people we work with, as well as their family members and loved ones.\u201d<\/em><\/p>\n<p>First Bus partnered with Beatson Cancer Charity last year, donating a customised and bespoke double-decker bus to help the charity raise awareness of its \u2018Together Along the Way\u2019 campaign across the west of Scotland.
